In most cases, no. Shotcrete is applied directly to the exposed surface of the structure. Foundation walls can be restored from the interior without excavating the exterior. Retaining walls can be restored from the face without digging behind them. Seawalls can be restored in place. The primary advantage of shotcrete over replacement is that it eliminates the excavation and reconstruction cost.
