Wave action creates surface impact and erosion. Freeze-thaw cycling creates damage from within the wall material itself. Water that has entered existing cracks freezes each winter, expands by approximately 9 percent in volume, and widens the crack. Each thaw allows deeper water infiltration. Each freeze expands the crack further. This internal expansion is why seawall cracks that appear minor in summer show significantly wider damage the following spring.
