How deep should cellar door area drains be?

Area drains should be:

  • Depth: Minimum 12" below door sill, preferably 18-24"
  • Width: Extend 6" beyond door perimeter on all sides
  • Gravel base: 4-6" crushed stone for drainage
  • Slope: 1/4" per foot away from door
