Sump Pump FAQs

Why is a sump pump essential for protecting my home from water damage?

A sump pump is a crucial device installed in your basement or crawl space’s lowest point. Its primary function is to collect and expel water, safeguarding your home against flooding and subsequent water damage.

How can I determine if my property requires a sump pump installation?

If you are experiencing persistent dampness, mold or mildew growth, and unpleasant odors in your basement or crawl space this is sign that you reqire a sump pump.

What exactly is a sump pump?

A sump pump is a device that works directly with your waterproofing system to drain any existing water from your basement or crawl space to the outside of your home, as well as prevent any water or moisture from entering these spaces. A hole will be dug into the foundation of your home, typically beneath the finished floor of a basement. We install the sump pump in this hole (called a basin). Each sump pump has pressure or water level sensors built into the valves that alerts the system when a level or water or moisture is present in your space and engages the system to dispense this. Sump pumps are designed to automatically remove any standing water from your basement and direct it away from your home using a discharge pipe if the water level rises too high.

What is the typical size of a sump pump system?

Most of our sump basins are 18-25 gallons in size depending on the system that you choose. Typically the larger the basin of the sump pump system, the better because it will allow the pump to run less frequently and longer. This increases the longevity of your system.

What are some benefits to installing a sump pump system?

Installing a sump pump system in your home comes with numerous, big advantages. Here are just a few benefits to adding a sump pump to your home:

    1. Defend your basement against flooding.
    2. Protect the paint and other wall coverings from peeling.
    3. Safeguard basement appliances such as the washer, dryer, and spare freezer.
    4. Reduce mold, mildew, and fungus growth.
    5. Discourage termites and other insect invasions.
    6. Improve indoor air quality.
    7. Keep your foundation intact.
    8. Make the basement drier and more comfortable year-round
    9. Enjoy peace of mind, no matter what the weather is doing.
    10. Meet a requirement for homeowner’s insurance coverage of basement flood damage.

How long does sump pump installation take?

On average, sump pump installations can take anywhere from 6-8 hours, but each job is different. When we come to your home to provide you with your free estimate for your sump pump installation, we will also provide you with an expected time frame for your installation.

Where will my sump pump drain to?

Your sump pump will drain through a pipe in your basement wall to a designated area away from your home. This may include a pond, creek, or body of water near your house, a dry well, or a neighborhood drain/sewer. When working with EcoSpect and assessing your area for an estimate, we will discuss this with you, as some areas have building codes in terms of where sump pumps are allowed to drain. We will ensure with you that all of your sump pump installations take these into account and are up to code with this.

How often should my sump pump system be serviced?

Every sump pump system should be serviced annually to ensure that it is working properly and that it is detecting any excess moisture building up in your basement. During each servicing appointment, we will check this functionality, ensure that your system is working properly, make any necessary cleanings/adjustments, and offer any recommendations that we may have to you to ensure your basement is fully protected.

What are some signs that my sump pump system needs servicing?

  1. Should you notice any buildup of moisture in your basement, including but not limited to, a feeling of dampness in the air, a change in smell, unusual noises, frequent cycling of the system, or a consistent failure of your sump pump to turn on/off, please contact EcoSpect for a service call. We would be happy to come to your home, assess the situation, and make any necessary repairs to your sump pump.

How long does a sump pump last?

At EcoSpect, we are proud to offer only the best and highest quality sump pump products. That being said, our products typically last anywhere from 7-10 years and can last longer with regular maintenance and servicing. This is something that will be further discussed with your installation.
